    Frequently Asked Questions

How long does creamy horseradish last?

Creamy horseradish is a condiment that typically lasts about 2-3 weeks in the fridge. However, it's important to note that because this product contains vinegar and spices, it can be prone to spoilage. So if you don't think you'll be able to eat it within that time or if you just want to make sure it's safe before eating, dilute the sauce with water prior to storage.

Does fresh horseradish need to be refrigerated?

If you're looking for an easy way to avoid food poisoning, then avoiding horseradish may not be the best idea. Horseradish is a spice that is derived from the plant family Brassicaceae and contains high levels of histamine. Histamines are chemicals that can cause your body to release fluids and toxins which can lead to serious health problems, including gastric upset (indigestion), fever, diarrhea, or even vomiting.
If you do decide to eat horseradish, make sure to dilute it in advance if possible or consume it sparingly. And if you experience any adverse effects after eating it, please consult your doctor immediately.

How do you preserve fresh horseradish?

For up to three months, keep in dark, perforated plastic bags in the refrigerator between 32 and 40°F. Use your cold root cellar, if you're fortunate enough to have one, for horseradish roots. Ideal storage conditions for the roots include bundling, moist sand, and complete darkness.
